ING Forerunners defy the virtual Lanzarote Triathlon

Thirty colleagues from both the Netherlands and Belgium branches of ING pushed themselves to their sporting limits to compete in the Ocean Lava Triathlon in Lanzarote. The ‘Forerunners’ were trained to cover the Olympic distance, which equals 1.5 km of swimming, 42 km of cycling and 10 km of running.

What’s important about these ambassador programmes? We don’t look for seasoned athletes, although they are always welcome to keep bettering themselves. Most participants are complete novices. The common denominator: unwavering motivation and a desire to lead a more active and healthy lifestyle. “A project like this offers a unique chance to not only become fitter in your personal life, but also to perform better in your working environment,” is what stood out for one of the participants.

Even though they could not depart to the Canary Islands, we kept the goal intact and developed a fully virtual triathlon for the Forerunners to take on. With a virtual kick-off, physical screening when it was possible again, and interim challenges around nutrition & triathlon, we made the most of it! During the "closing event", everyone had two days to swim 750 m, cycle 20 km and run 5 km.
